In a rare show of support, House Republicans are coming out in full force with their support of the impeachment proceeding against President Donald Trump. With uncertainty still lingering about who will take over the role of House Speaker, many had expected a lack of input from the Republican side of the aisle, but that has been far from the truth in recent weeks.
With Republicans feeling threatened by the implications of the impeachment inquiry, many of them have refused to sit by idly and let the proceedings move ahead unchecked. Instead, they are embracing the inquiry and offering their full support to the investigation. In an extraordinary move, several Republicans have taken to the airwaves in defense of Trump, claiming that the probe is unwarranted and unconstitutional.
At the same time, a few Republican leaders have come out in support of the inquiry. Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy has said that he’s encouraged the investigation to move forward and even House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer has voiced his support.
Though the Speaker of the House has yet to be selected, the Republican Party is putting aside their differences in order to ensure that the impeachment inquiry moves forward. It is, after all, a matter of historic proportion and one in which the country has an immense interest. It is, after all, the job of the legislative branch to provide a check on the executive, something that Trump has been doing his best to subvert.
Though it is uncertain what will come of the inquiry in the end, the support from House Republicans is an encouraging sign that not everyone is willing to let this volatile situation slide. More importantly, it is a reminder that lawmakers from both sides of the aisle must work together to ensure the integrity and continuity of our laws and institutions.
