The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has reached an agreement in principle with Stellantis, the owner of major automobile companies such as Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, and RAM. The carmaker has announced that a tentative agreement was signed on Sunday to end the strike, which began six days ago on Wednesday April 28, 2021.
The union said that details of the deal will be kept confidential until all its members vote on the contract. The UAW has previously commented that some of the workers’ demands included wage increases, improved job security, and better health care and retirement benefits.
It is not yet known exactly what the agreement entails, but the negotiations appear to have been successful. “We are pleased that the company and the Union were able to reach a tentative agreement that addresses the concerns of UAW members who work at Stellantis,” said the UAW International in a statement to the press.
The strike comes as car sales have been on the rise in recent months. Stellantis reported better than expected sales in the first quarter of 2021, with their sales increasing by 7.1%.
The automobile industry as a whole is eager to get back to business. This agreement between Stellantis and the UAW serves as a reminder of how important it is for companies to look out for their employees and negotiate solutions that work for both sides. This is a positive step forward for the industry as a whole.
