In a speech given yesterday in Manchester, New Hampshire, the Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden highlighted President Donald Trump’s renewed efforts in court to overturn the Affordable Care Act. Biden pointed out that while Trump has done little to replace the popular health care law should it be eliminated, the judiciary branch’s attempts to dismantle the law would cause serious damage to the health care system.
“Trump has made clear that he doesn’t care if he destroys our health care system,” said Biden. “He wants to take away the security of health care coverage for tens of millions of Americans and millions of New Hampshire residents. He wants to take away protections for pre-existing conditions and the lower prescription drug costs that millions of Americans depend on.”
Biden argued that the Affordable Care Act is essential to protecting individuals from high health care costs and, in some cases, from financial ruin if they get sick or injured. He noted that the ACA has provided coverage for millions of children, seniors, and those with pre-existing conditions, and that it prevents insurance companies from unjustly denying coverage, dropping policyholders, or charging excessive premiums.
In addition to voicing his opposition to Trump’s efforts to repeal the ACA, Biden called for healthcare reform that goes beyond the ACA. He proposed a variety of measures that he said would improve healthcare security, such as lowering prescription drug prices, closing loopholes in the insurance system, and increasing access to preventive care.
While it remains to be seen whether Trump’s efforts to repeal the ACA will ever gain traction, this latest development is a reminder of the importance of the November election and the power of our votes to shape our nation’s future.
