President Trump recently surprised many people when he declared himself to be “very pro-life.” This announcement was met with delight by pro-life groups, who have quickly been reminded that they aren’t a “cheap date.”
After securing the support of the pro-life lobby, some GOP leaders have been expecting President Trump to make sweeping changes to the nation’s policies regarding reproductive health. This expectation has been based on what the president said in an April 5th press conference. During the event, he said, “I am pro-life and I understand the complexities of the issues at hand.”
But while pro-life supporters are hoping for a shift in government policy, they’re also reminding Trump that their support will have to be reciprocated. Deanna Wallace, senior legal counsel for Americans United for Life, said that “Pro-life organizations feel strongly that our support of a candidate means mutual support – that they will support us in the issues that we care about.”
Wallace further stated that “we expect Trump to make good on his statements and to continue to hold a consistent pro-life policy for his entire term.” This includes using his executive authority to advance the pro-life cause, such as by halting taxpayer-funded abortions or protecting the conscience rights of medical professionals who do not wish to be involved in abortions.
Meanwhile, pro-choice organizations are highly suspicious of Trump’s newfound pro-life stance. They are worried that he could use it as a political tool to gain election-year momentum in key vote-rich states. Furthermore, they worry that Trump may use his power and influence to roll back access to crucial reproductive health services, such as access to contraception and safe abortion procedures.
For now, pro-life organizations are cautiously optimistic about Trump’s commitment to their cause. And while they remain hopeful for significant policy changes that will benefit their side, they have also made it clear that they want something in return. As Wallace put it, “The pro-life movement is looking for more than words. We want action, and it remains to be seen whether or not Trump is truly committed to the cause.”
